Hinterland Trading Air Plant terrariums have become extremely popular. They are epiphytes, which attach to other plants or trees for support. Their roots are only used to anchor themselves and are normally removed during cultivation for aesthetics. They are not parasitic, instead they gather micro nutrients from the air and water in structures called trichomes on their leaves. As the plant dries the trichomes take on a white powder look. After watering the plant will return to a vibrant green. Air Plants must dry fully between watering because they are susceptible to rot if left wet to long. These Air Plants will only bloom once, but after the bloom they can form up to 12 "Pups", or offspring, at their base. The main plant will slowly be on its way out, but the Pups will continue to thrive and will separate when mature. Air Plants prefer filtered sunlight as their natural home is under tree canopy. This makes them perfect house plants.

This primary hybrid was registered in 1996, and the cross is producing some spectacular flowers in pink and greenish gold, with some striping on the dorsal and some spots on the petals. They really are lovely. The breeding on this one is Paphiopedilum primulinum x Paph. henryanum. The primulinum may impart some sequential blooming characteristics, so don't be too quick to cut off a spike after the first blooming. Pictured is one of the first bloomers. You can expect there to be some variety in the flowers, as this is a seed cross, but all should be really pretty. This plant is blooming size, which we define as likely to flower within a year or so. These have a leaf span of 8 to 9 inches, and they are in 3.5 inch pots. Most have multiple growths and we always ship the largest. These are easy to grow (good beginner orchid) -- provide moderately low light, keep from drying out completely, fertilize weakly (3-3-3) every three or four weeks.
