Few house plants are as easy to grow and welcome in the home as the attractive Dracaena plant. Its dramatic form makes a striking floor plant. "Janet Craig" is well worth getting to know. Although tropical by nature, it adapts beautifully to average home conditions. In fact, it does so well on its own, you don't need to fuss over it at all. Young plants are a tuft of upright leaves. As the plant grows, it forms a cane-like stem with a cluster of leaves at its top. Its dark-green leaves are naturally shiny. Prune it back if it grows too tall. If you want, you can propagate the stem cuttings for more plants. Prefers bright, indirect light and keep evenly moist, not wet or dry. Pruning tip: Prune in spring or early summer to control its growth. You can cut off the cane at any height. It will sprout a new cluster of leaves from where it was cut.

The Christmas cactus is native to the South American jungles. The flowers bloom once a year and come in shades of fuchsia, yellow, salmon, pink, white, orange, red and sometimes will even have a combination of the colors. The Christmas cacti are tropical plants. They require sunlight and the blooms last longer with cooler temperatures. Keep them away from heaters, fireplaces, radiators, furnace ducts, and other heat sources. Place in a sunny location while indoors and if outdoors during the summer, find a place that has a sun/shade mix to prevent the plant from getting burned. The best way to be sure your plant is getting just the right amount of water is to wait until the soil is dry on the top and still a bit moist toward the bottom. Then water the plant until the soil is saturated. Drain off any excess water that accumulates on the bottom. Then do not water again until the top half of the soil feels dry to the touch again. Well-drained soil is very important. A high quality cactus mix is great. If you can't find any that is made for cactus you can mix two parts regular potting soil with one part coarse sand. In order to insure your plant will bloom in time for Christmas, you will need to give the plant a rest period. Cut back on the watering leaving the soil only partly moist. Allow at least 14 hours of total darkness for the plant at night and sun during the day, until the buds begin to form. Start the dark period in early September. Place in a terrarium, hang from a wire, mount to driftwood or simply place in a decorative basket in filtered light and spritz with water once a week. That's it! Air plants can't be planted in soil, as it damages them, and they do best in shady areas, or birght, filtered light. Their ease of care makes them the perfect gift or addition to any home. Spray with water once a week for best results. In hot weather, more frequent water can be done, and in colder weather, Tillandsia require less water. Brighter light can produce some amazing colors from these Air Plants, but too much beating, direct sun can be very harmful, so introduce slowly. The corn plant is an oldie but goodie in the houseplant industry. Europeans have been using them as indoor plants since the mid-1800s and they've been popular in the United States since the early twentieth century. Corn plants are grown as thick canes that sprout from buds along the cane, achieving a "false palm" effect (they're sometimes called false palms). They make good houseplants because they are tall and narrow, with controlled growth, and can withstand a fairly significant amount of abuse from casual indoor gardeners. The corn plant prefers bright, indirect light and should be kept evenly moist, not wet or dry. Never allow the plant to stand in water.
