This one is Miltassia Charles M Fitch 'Izumi' AM/AOS. A member of the oncidium family, this orchid (Brs varrucosa x Milt spectabilis) blooms twice a year when mature and pretty much grows like the proverbial weed. The flowers are just amazing -- relatively large, somewhat spidery and simply stunning. The color is a wonderful mottled lavender/purple on the petals and sepals, with a little olive green in the background; the large lip is a stunning lavender with some spots in the center. These are near blooming size plants with several pseudobulbs. We think they are likely to flower with 12 to 18 months. Mature plants can have 6 to 8 flowers per bloom spike and we have seen some grown up specimens with a dozen or more spikes all at once. Spectacular! These are easy to grow. This one is Miltoniopsis Lennart Karl Gottling 'Hula Skirt', in shades of red and dark red with a white waterfall lip, a beautiful orchid. It's blooming size but NOT in flower now. It will put out stunning red and white flowers that look like those pictured. The breeding on this mericlone is Miltoniopsis Timberline x Miltoniopsis Pearl Ono. These orchids are in 4-inch pots and they tend to be spring and fall bloomers. They are not in flower now. They currently stand 12 to 14 inches high or more measured from the bottom of the pot. We have a bunch of these and we'll pick out a nice one for you. We always ship the largest. Miltoniopsis orchids are cool growers. Often called "The Pansy Orchid," many of them have a wonderful fresh fragrance. For home and hobby growers, we recommend them as a house plant. This one is a clone of an orchid that produces spectacular pink flowers with a hint of yellow in the centers. The common name is Miltonidium, but these days they go by Vuylstekeara. The breeding is Oncidium Wally Curry x Miltonia Guanabara. This is the 'Rio' cultivar. But forget all that orchid-speak and just enjoy the flowers when they bloom. These are in spike now. The flowers can be two to three inches across, and there can be 7 to 8 or more on a single stem. Mature plants can have multiple spikes all at once. Spectacular! These plants stand 16 inches high or more. They have three or four pseudobulbs. They're easy to grow, too. Medium light and water are best, fertilize weakly twice a month.
