These plants have a rich history of cultivation. In China, it was kept as a treasured houseplant because the Eight Gods bestowed their eight virtues on those who grew them. These virtues include long life, prosperity, intelligence, beauty, art, poetry, health and strength. The plants were kept near the entrances inside the home so that the eight virtues could pass through in a manner pre-Feng Shui. These plants also were placed in fine restaurants, herbalists, acupuncturists, doctor's offices, accountant's offices, banks, shrines, monastaries, and even in rice paddies. Sansevierias were grown and cherished well before the Chinese ti plant (Dracaena spp.) also known as the Good Luck Bamboo! The sansevieria is also referred to as a dragon for its many unique qualities. As with many Asian martial arts techniques, the strength comes from within. The sansevieria has been known to split large earthen pots upon reaching larger sizes. The Chinese have usually kept this plant potted in a pot within a ceramic pot often ornated with dragons and phoenixes. The attraction of this plant towards dragons is said to be magnetic. The Air Plant Xerographica (zero-grafika) is among the largest in the Air Plant family and is sometimes referred to as the King of the Air Plants. Xerographic as have elegant silvery gray leaves that begin broad and tapper taper to a point. The minimum size we ship is 6 inches wide for a tightly curled plant, with the average being 8 inches wide. As the Xerographica settles into its new home and grows it can exceed a foot in width. Their rosette appearance makes them popular centerpieces. Their unique features and origins make them great conversation pieces. Air Plants (Tillandsia) get their common name from the fact they don't require soil. They are epiphytes, which attach to other plants or trees for support. Their roots are only used to anchor themselves and are normally removed during cultivation for aesthetics. They are not parasitic, instead they gather micro nutrients from the air and water in structures called trichomes on their leaves. As the plant dries the trichomes take on a white powder look. After watering the plant will return to a vibrant green. Air Plants must dry fully between watering because they are susceptible to rot if left wet to long. Xerographic as come from dry forests in higher elevations of Central America. They also make their home higher in the forest canopy than most Air Plants so they prefer a little more light and a little less water than others.

Air Plant (Scaposa Kolbii) is very similar to the Ionantha (most common Air Plant) in size and appearance. So much so that they are often confused for each other. The difference is that the Ionantha normally grows into a round shape, the Scaposa tends to have more of a windswept shape. This plant ship between 2 and 3 inches and will grow taller, but not much taller. As the plant comes into bloom the silver green will give way to pink and red at the leaf tips, then it will have a pretty spectacular pink, purple, and white bloom.
