Don't be fooled by the unasuming name. The Large Air Plant Assortment Centerpiece is an intricate bold display of nature at its finest. When asked, "What's all the fuss about Air Plants? We show them this Centerpiece and the response is always, "Wow. I get it now." The assortment is set in a 10 1/4 X 5 1/2 inch Cooper planter and begins with 2 Air Plant Fasciculatas in the center. One of the larger of the Air Plant family and commonly known as the Giant Air Plant, Fasciculata have a woody base, long green and silver leaves that reach up and cone out slightly. The Fasciculata will bloom on its own terms, but when it does you are in for a treat. The center leaves will begin to grow larger and turn a vibrant red. The show culminates with a purple protrusion at the top of the red leaves that spawns tiny yellow flowers. The short sides of the planter feature 2 Abdita for a splash of color. Also mixed in are 2 Argentea with whispery thin leaves and a blooming stalk that will grow twice the plant's height, 2 Medusa who's bulbous base and snake like leaves add character to the setting, 2 Concolor for a bit of majesty, 2 Velutina, and 9 Scaposa to finish off with a touch of whimsy. Air Plants (Tillandsia) get their common name from the fact they don't require soil. They are epiphytes, which attach to other plants or trees for support. Their roots are only used to anchor themselves and are normally removed during cultivation for aesthetics. They are not parasitic, instead they gather micro nutrients from the air and water in structures called trichomes on their leaves. As the plant dries the trichomes take on a white powder look. After watering the plant will return to a vibrant green. Air Plants must dry fully between watering because they are susceptible to rot if left wet too long. After the Air Plants bloom they can form up to 12 "Pups", or offspring, at their base.
