We start with a small Xerographic, which is actually the largest plant in this set. Next in order of descending size are Air Plants: Fasciculate, Juncea, Medusa, Stricta, Valentina, Oxacana, Abdita, Ionantha Ionantha, and Agrentea. Air Plants (Tillandsia) get their common name from the fact they don't require soil. They are epiphytes, which attach to other plants or trees for support. Their roots are only used to anchor themselves and are normally removed during cultivation for aesthetics. They are not parasitic, instead they gather micro nutrients from the air and water in structures called trichomes on their leaves. As the plant dries the trichomes take on a white powder look. After watering the plant will return to a vibrant green. Air Plants must dry fully between watering because they are susceptible to rot if left wet to long. Some of these Air Plants will only bloom once, but after the bloom they can form up to 12 "Pups", or offspring, at their base. This one is Miltoniopsis Andrea West, a yellow orchid, near blooming size but not in flower now. It will put out beautiful yellow flowers, often with a soft blush of pink. The flowers are stunningly beautiful. The breeding on this mericlone is Miltoniopsis Capitola x Miltoniopsis Doctor Ruth Ono. We expect you'll see flowers in 18 months or so. These orchids are in 3.5-inch pots and they tend to be spring and fall bloomers. They are not in flower now. They currently stand 10 to 12 inches high measured from the bottom of the pot. We have a bunch of these and we'll pick out a nice one for you. We always ship the largest. Miltoniopsis orchids are cool growers. Often called "The Pansy Orchid," many of them have a wonderful fresh fragrance. For home and hobby growers, we recommend them as a house plant. Just give them moderate indirect light, water thoroughly three times a week, fertilize weakly every two weeks. Provide a temperature range of 60 to 75 degrees or so. These do very well under lights. These plants have a rich history of cultivation. In China, it was kept as a treasured houseplant because the Eight Gods bestowed their eight virtues on those who grew them. These virtues include long life, prosperity, intelligence, beauty, art, poetry, health and strength. The plants were kept near the entrances inside the home so that the eight virtues could pass through in a manner pre-Feng Shui. These plants also were placed in fine restaurants, herbalists, acupuncturists, doctor's offices, accountant's offices, banks, shrines, monastaries, and even in rice paddies. Sansevierias were grown and cherished well before the Chinese ti plant (Dracaena spp.) also known as the Good Luck Bamboo! The sansevieria is also referred to as a dragon for its many unique qualities. As with many Asian martial arts techniques, the strength comes from within. The sansevieria has been known to split large earthen pots upon reaching larger sizes. The Chinese have usually kept this plant potted in a pot within a ceramic pot often ornated with dragons and phoenixes. The attraction of this plant towards dragons is said to be magnetic. This is it. Yum! Sharry Baby is THE classic chocolate orchid, the one that exudes Eau de Godiva and can fill a small room with the fragrance of a freshly opened box of chocolates. And the great thing about these orchids is that they grow so quickly and easily that just about everyone can be successful raising them. AND they bloom several times a year once they reach blooming size. This particular version of Sharry Baby is called 'Sweet Fragrance' and the flowers are burgundy / maroon and white with a white lip. They arch gracefully on a long stem. This orchid is near blooming size, actively growing in a 3.5 inch square pot. Not in flower at present. We think it's likely to flower within 12 months or so. We have a number of these and we'll pick out a nice one for you. These are easy to grow. Medium light and water are best, fertilize weakly twice a month.
