If you like red orchids, this milt is one of the nicest around. Mps Bert Field is Mps. Mulatto Queen x Mps. Woodlands. The flowers range from bright red to slightly darker, with touches of white and some yellow deep in the throat. The flowers are just stunningly beautiful. This is the 'Crimson Glow' cultivar. These orchids are freshly repotted in 4-inch pots. They are nicely started seedlings, 8 to 9 inches high. They sometimes bloom in the fall, but spring is the main blooming season. We think these are one to two years from first flowering, but well worth the wait. Miltoniopsis orchids are cool growers. Often called "The Pansy Orchid," many of them have a wonderful fresh fragrance. For home and hobby growers, we recommend them as a house plant. Just give them moderate indirect light, water thoroughly three times a week, fertilize weakly every two weeks. Provide a temperature range of 60 to 75 degrees or so. Good air movement helps. This is one of our all-time favorite cattleya hybrids. You get big flowers, and with this cultivar you get more of a dark red lip, with lavender in the petals and those wonderful chip flares -- one could hardly ask for more. The breeding is Cattleya walkeriana x Cattleya Wayndora. This particular orchid is a clone of the 'Islander Delights' cultivar, which has an AM from the American Orchid Society. Whatever. The flowers are what count, and they are just lovely. And they are fragrant. These are near blooming size, which means we think they are likely to flower in 12 to 24 months or so. If we had to guess, we'd say closer to 12 months than 24. They are in 4 inch pots and each has five or six pseudobulbs. The leaves are six to seven inches. This one is a clone of an orchid that produces spectacular pink flowers with a hint of yellow in the centers. The common name is Miltonidium, but these days they go by Vuylstekeara. The breeding is Oncidium Wally Curry x Miltonia Guanabara. This is the 'Rio' cultivar. But forget all that orchid-speak and just enjoy the flowers when they bloom. These are in spike now. The flowers can be two to three inches across, and there can be 7 to 8 or more on a single stem. Mature plants can have multiple spikes all at once. Spectacular! These plants stand 16 inches high or more. They have three or four pseudobulbs. They're easy to grow, too. Medium light and water are best, fertilize weakly twice a month.
